The aerospace quality standard you know as AS9100 is being rewritten and rebranded as IA9100 by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). The “IA” stands for International Aerospace — and the change is far more than a new label. It is a generational update to what counts as a defensible quality system.
Why the change is happening
The IAQG is realigning the standard with the upcoming ISO 9001:2026 revision and, at the same time, unifying the regional variants (AS9100 in the Americas, EN9100 in Europe, JISQ 9100 in Asia-Pacific) into a single global standard. The result elevates several areas that used to sit at the edges: information security, counterfeit-part prevention, product safety, human factors, and supplier and sub-tier management.
The timeline
- ~September 2026 — ISO 9001:2026 is expected to be published.
- Late 2026 — an initial IA9100 limited update and rebrand.
- 2027 — the comprehensive IA9100 revision, aligned to ISO 9001:2026.
- ~2028–2029 — the end of the two-to-three-year transition window.
Because it arrives in two stages, plan for the possibility of two transition audits rather than one.
What is actually changing
- Information & infrastructure security is formalized inside the QMS (a new clause, signaled as 7.1.7). For the first time, cybersecurity is a quality-system requirement, not just an IT concern.
- Supplier and sub-tier management is strengthened, with more explicit flow-down expectations.
- Counterfeit parts and product safety controls are elevated.
- Digital assurance and data integrity expectations grow, reflecting the digital thread across the product lifecycle.
- Leadership, ethics, and quality culture get more emphasis, mirroring ISO 9001:2026.
What contractors and subcontractors should expect
- New clauses in your supplier quality agreements — cybersecurity and export-control flow-downs. For defense work, that means DFARS 252.204-7012 and CMMC obligations.
- To demonstrate a security posture — if you have never assessed your systems against NIST SP 800-171 or CMMC, IA9100 will effectively require it.
- Primes flowing requirements down earlier — subcontractors that get ahead of this will win work; those that wait may be squeezed on timelines.
What to do now
- Run a gap analysis mapping your current AS9100D system to the ISO 9001:2026 drafts and the signaled IA9100 changes.
- Stand up NIST 800-171 / CMMC readiness if it is not already in place.
- Update your Quality Manual, procedures, and supplier agreements to anticipate the new clauses.
- Train leadership and internal auditors on the new competencies — digital assurance, cybersecurity, and human factors.
